I work in a variety of media - mainly
clay, jewelry, and glass. I'm currently engrossed in colored clay
monotypes. I'm interested in the layers of color that appear to
float, drawing the eye deeper into the print.
I've also started a new line of carved porcelain vases and I'm having
fun painting with colored slip to create pots that look similar to
my monotypes.
The monotypes are made by layering colored slip onto a leather-hard
clay slab. After I build up enough color and gestural marks I
pull a print. The top surface of the slab becomes the bottom
layer of the print - some of it shows through and some of the next
layer becomes visible, too. I try to plan what the monotype will
look like, but never know for sure how much of the next layer will be
exposed.
I'm constantly experimenting and do what I can to emphasize composition
and color; however, the end result always has a bit of the unexpected.
I love working with layers of color in both my prints and
pottery. I enjoy the dance of color and the element of surprise
as I coax out the underlying images and forms.
